What TopGrip is, who it is for, and how it works.
What is TopGrip?
TopGrip turns every result into a clear picture of each athlete: where they rank, how far they have come and who they are likely to meet next. We built it to help the people who make the sport happen: the athletes on the mat, the parents in the stands and the coaches in the chair.
Watch your rating climb event by event, see the opponents you have turned around, and know your division before you bow in.
Every result and every bout of your child's journey in one place, season by season, plus the progress that a single result can hide.
Scout the field for every athlete you take to an event, compare any two athletes head to head, and see your club's medals against other clubs.
A rating after every event, the strength of the field faced, podiums, upsets and rivals, season by season.
Previews of who is in each division, then every podium and bout in one place: no hunting through draw sheets.
Opponent boards, head-to-head records and win chances. Tested on past seasons, the favourite won about 77% of bouts.
National and provincial points rankings from U14 to Senior, every event and every club, updated as new results are posted.
Every placing of an athlete from a Canadian club at an event with published results during the season (Sept–Aug). Nationals = Open Nationals and Elite Nationals. Provincial = Eastern Canadian Championship and every provincial open (Ontario, Québec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Pacific, Edmonton). Only main competitive divisions count: novice, intermediate, grade-restricted divisions (e.g. 4k5k, 5k4k3k) and development pools are left out. Combined U21/Senior divisions count as Senior.
Points are kept separately for each age group, gender and weight class; an athlete who fights in two age groups appears in both. Ties are broken by golds, then silvers, bronzes and 5ths. Tie-break pools (TB) aren't double-counted. Rankings run from U14 to Senior; U12 and younger, veterans/masters, ne-waza, kata and team events aren't counted.
Each athlete takes the province listed with their club, or the province that club is listed under elsewhere on the site. Athletes whose club never shows a province are ranked nationally and listed under “Province not listed”. Athletes from clubs outside Canada (for example US clubs at the Québec Open) are not ranked; they still appear on opponent boards and in head-to-head, marked with their country, because they can be met at Canadian events. Choosing a province shows the athlete's rank in that province next to their rank across Canada.
Under Rankings, choose Top 10 to see the ten best athletes of each age group (U14 to Senior), men and women, for a season. An athlete's points are added up over every weight class they fought in within that age group, the same as in All athletes, so the two views always agree. Athletes level on points and medals share a place and all of them show. Pick a province to see places within it, with the national place beside. The season in progress shows standings so far.
Click any name to see that athlete's public results and bouts — every event they entered, how they placed, and who they fought. Their rating, win chance against any opponent, progress over time and opponent scouting are part of TopGrip, for verified parents, guardians and coaches. Sign in to see them.
Every athlete gets a modified Elo-style rating adapted for individual combat sports, computed from publicly available results, and every number comes with a confidence range. Tested on past seasons, the favourite won about 77% of bouts. The ratings, the win chance against any opponent and the opponent-scouting boards are in TopGrip — sign in to see them.
Under Events, the Calendar tab lists the season's competitions and camps as the organizers list them: the Judo Canada and Judo Ontario calendars, checked about once a month. Events with no date yet are listed last, and dates can change, so confirm with the organizer before you travel. Once an event has results on record, a Results button takes you to its podiums and bouts. For earlier seasons the calendar shows the events that have results.
